A BRITISH holidaymaker has died while attempting to swim off the coast of Praia da Galé, in Albufeira. According to eyewitnesses, the 54-year-old woman, who has not been named, insisted on swimming in the sea near the cliffs, despite the fact that the sea was very turbulent. The victim’s husband and son tried their best to rescue the woman from the water, but, despite their efforts, she was dragged out to sea and thrown against the cliffs.
Witness Luís Mendes said that he heard the tourists’ screams and ran to help them, but was unable to do anything. “When I arrived, the son and husband had managed to get the body out of the water. I ran to a local restaurant for help and the staff called an ambulance, but, when the doctor arrived, all he could do was announce the time of death,” Mendes explained. The woman’s husband and son were taken to the Barlavento hospital, where they were treated for minor cuts and shock.
