Two talks by Canada-based historian Ron B. Thomson on the Lisbon Church of São Roque are taking place in December.
The Church of São Roque was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere. The church was one of the buildings that managed to survive the 1755 earthquake relatively unscathed.
Ron B. Thomson earned his Masters in the history of science at the University of Toronto and his doctorate in history at Oxford in 1975.
He has been visiting the Algarve since 1971 and owns a property near Lagoa, where he stays for half of the year.
The first talk is on December 14 at 6.30pm, at the Convento de São José in Lagoa and costs €2; the second is on December 17 at 11am at the Municipal Library in Tavira and is free to attend.
