History men

Faro-born Portuguese champion Rui Machado continues to be the most successful Algarve tennis player of all time despite making a second round exit against top seed Maximo Gonzalez in a valuable Turin Challenger last week.

In the same tournament the 25-year-old partnered his highest ever ATP ranked (No83) compatriot Frederico Gil into the doubles last four before succumbing 6-7, 5-7 to Italian opponents. Meanwhile at Wimbledon, Andy Roddick snuffed out “Murraymania” in the mens’ semi-finals by beating the home favourite but could not prevent Roger Federer from recording a record 15th Grand Slam title in an epic five-set final duel which ended 16-14 in the Swiss’ favour in the deciding set.
