Historic hotel re-opens after €5.9m renovation

The historic Hotel Praia, overlooking Praia dos Pescadores in Albufeira, re-opened this week after major refurbishment works by the INATEL Foundation to the tune of €5.9 million.

The opening ceremony took place on Tuesday at the hotel and saw the participation of the president of INATEL and its administration board, a representative of the municipality of Albufeira and of the national tourism board.

One of three INATEL hotels in Albufeira, Hotel Praia was first inaugurated in 1960 as a holiday unit for the foundation’s workers and their families.

The hotel offers 110 rooms, 16 of which are suites, and on the ground floor guests will have various services at their disposal, namely a dining room, a commercial area with a new snack-bar and the renovated Esplanada INATEL terrace overlooking the beach.

The redevelopment work and architectural make-over began at the end of last year to focus on making the hotel unit more functional and more comfortable.

Once a fish canning factory in the early 20th century, the building then became a summer holiday camp for children under the then Fundação Nacional para a Alegria no Trabalho (FNAT), now INATEL. In the 60s, it was again redeveloped to become a holiday unit for foundation workers and their families.
