At the end of 2012, more than 13,500 people were in jail in Portugal, the highest number since 2004, according to statistics by the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP). The inmate population grew 6.4% since 2011, and by the end of 2012 there were still 1,977 detainees awaiting trial. Of the 13,504 people in prison in 2012, 12,766 were men.
