Another high-speed car chase in the Sintra area has ended with a 34-year-old man – suspected in the attempted murder of a policeman last New Year – eluding police after dumping his stolen vehicle and legging it into Cova da Moura – the notorious district known for outbreaks of violence and lawlessness.
The chase played out over 19 kms on Sunday, on the IC19 – already known as one of Portugal’s most dangerous roads.
According to reports, the man is believed to have tried to shoot a police agent with a shotgun last New Year’s Eve.
He was ordered to stop in Caxias, as he drove a Mini Cooper that was later reported as stolen.
The Mini Cooper is now being subjected to forensic tests, while a police source confirms the man is already well-known to the authorities and has convictions for theft.
Earlier this year, a father of two was killed after being hit by a stray bullet fired by runaways on the IC19 Click here.
