Players and officials in limbo following crowd disturbances

High drama at Olhanense

The Campeonato de Portugal game between SC Olhanense and Casa Pia (Lisbon) was dramatically abandoned with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. André Lopes’ stunning volley had given Casa Pia a 2-1 lead and their players ran to the area in front of the main stand where the Olhanense Grupo 1912 fans were gathered.

Several Casa Pia players, during their celebrations, are alleged to have made obscene and crude gestures to the crowd who responded by throwing objects at the players including plastic cups and bottles of water.

Referee Paulo Barradas from Setúbal, who took the players infield whilst officials tried to restore order, called the PSP police but, as they did not arrive within half-an-hour, stipulated by the Portugal FA (Article 15) the game was called off.

According to an official communiqué from the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and under their rules, the remaining time must be played the following day. Casa Pia did not show at the Estádio José Arcanjo at 4pm on Monday and as the Olhanense players and match officials were ready to restart as required, the club is claiming a 3-0 victory by default.

Casa Pia issued a statement saying that the referee had awarded them the game and the decision of the FPF has no legal standing within the regulations.

Earlier Olhanense had the best of the action in the first-half and Sapara’s goal 10 minutes before the interval gave them a deserved lead. Seventeen minutes after the restart, goal scorer Sapara made way for Hassan who proceeded to miss the easiest of chances with the goal at his mercy. The miss proved costly as Casa Pia levelled matters minutes later when the ball hit the near post and ricocheted off Evandro Roncato and into the net.

Hassan was inches away from giving Olhanense the lead before referee Barradas denied the home side a stonewall penalty. Then came André Lopes’ goal and the mayhem that ensued. There will no doubt be more repercussions as the FPF investigate the incident.

On Saturday, Olhanense travel to play Ferreiras FC at the Estádio da Nora, Albufeira, kick-off 4pm.
