High bid

A RARE 18th century Portuguese naval compass has fetched 30,000 euros at an auction by Christie’s in London.

The piece of mechanical craftsmanship went to an anonymous bidder for 30,544 euros.

Christie’s had expected the compass, dating from 1755, to fetch anything between 25,000 and 37,000 euros.

The compass was made at the workshop of renowned instrument maker Manuel Ferreira in Lisbon in the same year as the Great Lisbon Earthquake.
