Heroine vet saved Albufeira’s abandoned animals

Albufeira municipal vet Dra Cristina Simões has been hailed a heroine this week after her valiant efforts to save animals as shelters at the borough kennels were devastated by last Sunday’s storm.

Dogs and puppies were left standing in rising water as 102 litres of water per square metre came raining down for hours, and if it had not been for her “true dedication”, staying with the animals all the way through, “moving them to whatever minor safety she could find … all in the pouring rain”, SOS Algarve Animals is quite sure there would have been casualties.

But now that the worst is over, the situation is still critical. Everything used by the dogs is now waterlogged, and the charity is desperate for new supplies, blankets and other offers of help.

Meantime, Dra Cristina is understood to be remaining with her charges, many of which are understandably miserable and bedraggled.

SOS asks anyone able to help to get in touch via their Facebook page.
