PSP police officer Jorge Moreira has been hailed as a “hero” after talking a 23-year-old woman out of her intention to jump off a gantry on Lisbon’s busy IC19.
Police were called to the scene after the young woman was seen climbing the gantry at Alfragide.
A security perimeter was quickly set up and the road was partially cut-off to traffic.
Tension was high however as the woman seemed ready to jump.
“She sat on the structure and put her legs between the railings, indicating that she was about to throw herself off,” a police statement reads.
That’s where agent Moreira stepped in, managing to convince the young woman to let police take her down to safety.
She then received psychological support at the scene.
In the wake of less than complimentary stories about the PSP in the news at the moment, agent Moreira and his force have addressed the balance, receiving a huge wave of support and praise on their Facebook page.
