ALCOUTIM CÂMARA President, Francisco Amaral, has been travelling to inland areas to treat patients who are unable to travel to their nearest medical centre.
Amaral, as a qualified doctor, protested against the government’s decision to close the small medical centres in Giões and Pereiro at the beginning of the year.
He said that the elderly and bedridden were unable to travel to the two remaining medical centres, in Martinlongo and Alcoutim towns.
Regional Health Authority President, Rui Lourenço, said the closures were necessary and criticised Amaral for not implementing a transport system from rural areas to the medical centres. Amaral refused to support the government’s plan and that included offering free transport.
