Help the Algarve’s elderly

Dinner in aid of the old people’s home and hospice in Pêra

A FUNDRAISING dinner will be held at 8pm on Saturday, August 26 in the pavilion at the Sheraton Hotel, Pine Cliffs, in Albufeira, in aid of the construction of an old people’s home and hospice in Pêra. Fine paintings will be auctioned off by well-known artists, courtesy of the Galeria Corte Real in Paderne.

The first brick for the brand new old people’s home and hospice was laid on July 30, 2004 and construction work is on-going, but funds are desperately needed to continue the project. The government and Silves Câmara have allocated money towards the five million euro project and village festivals have, on average, raised 20,000 euros each year. Three years ago, a dinner with a performance by Sir Cliff Richard raised 30,000 euros, but more money is needed to guarantee the home’s completion.

The land on which the home will be built is a sloping field with a seaview. Jorge Guerreiro and Paulo Simões, who are the project’s architects, believe that when all the money has been raised, the 4,000sqm building will take two more years to construct.

Intended as a sanctuary for 35 men and women, with room for another 50 in the day care centre, the home and hospice will bring much-needed support for the elderly of the region. The ground floor will be devoted to a self-contained, 15-bed unit for terminally ill patients, who need 24-hour medical attention and care. Full-time nurses, medical treatment facilities, central heating, air purification systems, air conditioning and an area allocated to physiotherapy will ensure that this home will be one of the most luxurious in the Algarve.

Tickets for the dinner in aid of this very worthy cause are priced at 55 euros. Cheques can be made payable to Centro Paroquial and sent to Dermot Staveacre, Rua Bartolomeu Dias, 24, 8365-204 Pêra, or call Dermot on 282 322 390 for more information.
