A German tourist had to be rescued by helicopter after falling from a cliff-top near Fortaleza de Sagres last week. Cristian Schulz, 23, had been on holiday with her boyfriend. Early one morning, when it was still dark, she decided to take a walk on her own along the cliffs.
She slipped and lost her footing, sustained serious injuriesand was knocked unconscious for some hours. As daylight broke, a fisherman spotted the tourist and alerted the bombeiros, who sent a helicopter to the scene and then airlifted her to Barlavento Hospital.
The cliffs around Fortaleza de Sagres are notoriously hazardous and there have been several cases of tourists and fishermen falling in the past.
Another cliff-top fall was recorded in Praia do Pinhão. In this case, a 20-year-old Portuguese tourist fell from a height of 15 metres onto the sand at low tide. He was taken to Lagos Hospital and then to Barlavento Hospital. Authorities believe the soft landing in the sand saved the man in question from suffering more serious injuries.
