THE NATIONAL contingency plan for heat waves is now in place and will remain in force until September 30.
There are three levels of alert: green (normal temperatures), yellow (high temperatures – can affect health) and red (very high temperatures – can cause serious health problems). With a red alert, the authorities would open special shelters to care for the elderly, isolated and children. It would also be ensured that hospitals and health centres are able to provide an adequate response.
