The journey to a funeral parlour ended in tragedy at the weekend when a hearse crashed into a house wall, killing one of the four people travelling inside it.
The accident, at A-dos-Francos in Caldas da Rainha, is thought to have been caused by brake failure.
An occupant of the house into which the hearse crashed said: “I was in the sitting room and heard a huge bang. It seemed like an earthquake.”
Three people had to be cut from the vehicle, one of whom died on the way to hospital. A fourth passenger was able to escape through a window.
The coffin, though, remained intact and, according to Correio da Manhã, the funeral took place as planned later in the afternoon.
