Health minister “guarantees emigrés WILL benefit from free State healthcare”

Health minister Manuel Pizarro has been answering questions about the government order nº 1668/2023 which appeared to say that Portuguese nationals with tax residences outside the country would no longer be eligible for free State health care from January 1. The order has been lambasted by Portuguese expat communities – and now it appears it was interpreted all wrong/ or explained incorrectly. The SNS WILL pay for the care of Portuguese emigrés, “whenever the Portuguese State is unable to collect payment from organisations such as insurance companies or social protection systems for these citizens”, said the minister.
