Health concerns

Portugal’s minister of health is concerned that more doctors are opting to work in the private sector and is now looking at ways of motivating health experts in the National Health Service.

Ana Jorge told news agency Lusa: “I am concerned that some doctors are choosing to leave the National Health Service, especially when a large number of professionals gained their experience in public hospitals and would serve as mentors to younger doctors.”

The minister added that she is confident that public health in Portugal is able to respond to the demands, both in terms of number of doctors and quality of service, but admits there is a general lack of motivation.
