AROUND 2.5 tonnes of hashish has been seized recently on the Guadiana River near Castro Marim. In a joint operation, the Portuguese Fiscal Brigade and the Spanish Civil Guard surprised several dealers as they unloaded the drug onto the Spanish riverside, approximately 15km north of Vila Real de Santo António. The Spanish police arrived at the scene and stopped a van already loaded with almost 1.5 tonnes of hashish. However, they only managed to arrest one of the 12 men who were involved. The Fiscal Brigade sent a boat to the site, but they were unable to detect the suspect vessel. More than 30 packages of the drug were recovered from the river.
