Harsher penalties

A PROMISE has been made to increase environmental protection and impose harsher penalties on those who break environmental laws in the Algarve.

The environment protection service of the GNR and the regional development commission (CCDRA) said that improved communication between the two groups means that more people will be punished for damaging the environment. They will be fining people for dumping rubbish illegally, causing noise pollution and starting forest fires. Last year, 1,478 environmental inspections took place, resulting in 474 legal proceedings. Both groups admitted that it is necessary to speed up proceedings and recruit more staff.
