The third and latest round of the 2010 World Supersport Championship in Valencia began full of promise for the Parkalgar Honda team.
Top title contender Eugene Laverty, the winner of the Australian opening event before crashing at his Portimão home track, crowned an excellent qualifying session with first position on the starting grid for last Sunday afternoon’s race.
“I am very happy with the result today,” said the Northern Irishman. “The bike is running perfectly and I felt extremely comfortable, all the more so as I was using a second choice tyre during my fastest lap.”
Unfortunately, tyres continued to play a major role during the contest itself, the original ‘set-up’ of Laverty’s Honda CBR 600RR proving less than suitable for the unseasonably high temperatures resulting in a still highly credible fifth-place for the pole starter. Team mate Miguel Praia, who came in 12th, had other difficulties to contend with, injuries sustained during a practice session crash preventing the Albufeira resident from riding his customary strong finish.
Now third in the overall standings, Laverty will renew his personal rivalry with Valencia top two Joan Lascorz and Kenan Sofuoglu at Holland’s Assen circuit on the 25th of this month.
