THE Jewish Community of the Algarve will be celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah 5767, on Friday, September 22 with a buffet dinner in Portimão.
The first 10 days of a Jewish New Year are referred to as the 10 days of penitence and are set aside for self-examination.
This period culminates in Yom Kippur (day of atonement) when the entire day, from sunset to sunset, is spent in prayer and fasting.
The greeting offered each other at the New Year is, in Hebrew, Leshanah Tovah Tikatevu, meaning may you have a good year.
The buffet dinner will include traditional foods such as gefilte fish, chopped liver and herring and challah (round white bread).
