A friendly handball competition brought dozens of promising young international athletes to Lagoa between April 10 and 12.

The tournament featured the under-19 national teams of Portugal, Spain, France and Israel and was held to help the teams “prepare for the upcoming World Championship”.

The competition was won by France, with second place going to Spain followed by Israel in third and Portugal in fourth.

It was one of many sporting events that have been held recently in Lagoa, which has become an appealing destination for national and international teams of many different sports.

Deputy mayor Luís Encarnação says that the council aims to “take advantage of the great infrastructures it has, promote healthy lifestyle habits and reinforce Lagoa’s image as an active tourism destination”.

It has been estimated that sporting events in Lagoa have generated around €1.8 million for the local hotel sector.
