Hamper of essential items has increased by nearly €7 since IVA Zero ended

The end of IVA Zero in Portugal has brought an increase in the price of most of the foods that benefited from the tax exemption, writes Lusa today. In the space of a month and a half, the cost of a hamper of essential items increased by €6.77. The difference takes into account prices observed on December 19 – when IVA Zero was still in force – and those found today, Monday, “according to information collected from the website of a food distribution chain for the purchase of 54 foods that were exempt from IVA”. Other media sources have pointed out that fruit and vegetables are invariably cheaper if purchased in markets, rather than super/ hypermarkets.
