Hail rains down on Monchique

Footage shows intensity with which hail fell

Rain fell in many boroughs in the Algarve yesterday, but the most extreme weather phenomenon was recorded in Monchique, where massive balls of hail rained down on the inland mountainous municipality.

Footage shared by Facebook page ‘Bolos Algarvios’ shows the intensity of the hail as well as the size of the hail balls that fell.

At the Fóia peak in Monchique, around 12 litres of rain per square metre fell in the space of one hour, reports Correio da Manhã.

Elsewhere in the Algarve, strong periods of rainfall were registered in Castro Marim and Aljezur.

Weather forecasts for the coming days predict very cloudy skies with the possibility of rainfall and thunder in the southern region. According to Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), the weather may worsen on Sunday.
