Gynaecologist ‘condemned' for negligent homicide

Alvor || Madlen Yossif Benoun, the Bulgarian gynaecologist still believed to be working for the Hospital Particular do Algarve, has been condemned by the Public Prosecutor for the negligent homicide of a young woman who died during what should have been a routine operation in Alvor three years ago.
In Portimão tribunal this week, the Public Prosecutor is believed to be recommending a fine, instead of a prison term – although Correio da Manhã newspaper revealed that Dr Benoun’s defence lawyer is asking for his client to be absolved of the charges on the basis that negligent homicide has not been proven.
Meantime, the victim’s husband Jorge Miguel Filipe is hoping this latest move brings closure, and more importantly justice for the death of his 27-year-old wife Vera.
Filipe has been campaigning for Dr Benoun’s censure since his wife bled to death following a “small operation” to her ovaries. His lawyer is understood to be asking for €410,000 in compensation.
