Greek wonderkid Stefanos Tsitsipas wins Estoril Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the new champion of the Estoril Open, having defeated Pablo Cuevas in the final of Portugal’s only ATP tennis championship.

The 20-year-old Greek top seed proved why he was considered the favourite to win and needed only two sets – 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4) – to beat the Uruguayan and secure the third ATP title of his career and his first on a clay court.

“I am really happy to come away with the victory. It is my first title in Estoril and it is very special for me to have won on Portuguese soil,” he said after the match.

As Tsitsipas explained, his first title as a professional tennis player happened in Oliveira de Azeméis in 2016 when he was still competiting in the ‘Future’ category.

João Sousa, Portugal’s top tennis player and last year’s Estoril Open champion, was eliminated in the second round of the competition by David Goffin.
