Gravedigger dies ‘on the job’

Relatives, friends and workmates are in shock over the sudden death of a gravedigger who died opening up a patch of consecrated ground for burial. 56-year-old Manuel Gomes was discovered at the bottom of the pit he had dug in Freixo cemetery on Monday morning. Despite reanimation efforts he was declared dead at Ponte de Lima hospital. Gomes had been a gravedigger “all his life”, reports Correio da Manhã.
