Government wants access to all bank accounts by 2017

The government is trying to ensure that the tax department gets access to all citizens’ bank accounts, whether or not those citizens “are suspected or guilty of any fiscal impropriety” by 2017, reports Jornal de Notícias today (Wednesday).

This far, the paper adds, the national commission for data protection considers the plan illegal, and contrary to a decision by the Court of European Justice which ruled such scrutiny “excessive and unnecessary”.
