Government fund request

Financial support during the current economic crisis is being sought from the Portuguese government by the Algarve’s tourism sector.

In a letter to Prime Minister José Sócrates, the Algarve Association for Hotels and Tourism (AHETA) says that the short to medium term prospects for the sector do not look favourable at present and, therefore, government aid is required to safeguard businesses and jobs.

Some of the proposals put forward by AHETA include the creation of medium term credit lines to businesses and incentive programmes for hiring young people into the industry from the area. The annual Allgarve initiative should also be altered, according to AHETA, with funds earmarked for the programme being redirected into foreign promotional campaigns.
