Government approves Aljustrel mining venture

THE MINISTRY for Economy and Innovation has approved an investment that will reactivate the Aljustrel mines, in Beja, Alentejo.

Manuel Pinho’s announcement followed a Council of Ministers meeting that approved the outline draft of a contract agreed by the Portuguese state, AGC Minas de Portugal SGPS and the EuroZinc Mining Corporation.

The Ministry has highlighted the lucrative nature of minerals extracted from the Aljustrel mine, claiming that they can fetch “very elevated prices” in international markets. The venture, which will cost more than 76 million euros, should also help to create more than 100 jobs.
