Google announces private subsea cable connecting Portugal and South Africa

Google has announced that Equiano, a new private subsea cable, is going to link Portugal and South Africa.

Built by Alcatel Submarine Networks, the first phase of the project (reaching Lagos, Nigeria) is scheduled for completion in 2021.

Google already has two other subsea cables – Dunant linking Europe with the US, and Curie, spanning the US down to Chile.

The new connection “will feature numerous branching units that it can then use to connect lines to other countries along the way”.
