Good news for hepatitis C sufferers

A pioneering new treatment for people suffering from hepatitis C will be made available in Portugal this month – two years after its use was approved by the EC.
Boceprevir will improve patients’ quality of life and reduce the amount of time they need treatment, specialist Rui Tato Marinho told Correio da Manhã newspaper.
Another antiviral treatment, Telaprevir, is also expected to be introduced in the country soon. Meetings between Portuguese medicines authority Infarmed and the pharmaceutical company supplying the drug are taking place.
The health ministry has confirmed it will spend around €10 million a year on the two drugs.
