The nationwide Allgarve Masters Series which has seen thousands of amateur golfers competing for a place in the finals over the past four months reaches its climax at the Pestana Vila Sol course tomorrow (Saturday).
The top two finishers there will qualify for the prestigious Pro-Am event preceding the PGA European Tour Portugal Masters to be held at the Oceânico Victoria Club in Vilamoura for the fifth time between October 13 and 16.
Latest news concerning the confirmed starters for that valuable tournament’s main field revolves around the presence of no less than three previous winners in Spain’s Alvaro Quiros (2008), Englishman Steve Webster (2007) and last year’s champion Richard Green from Australia.
The 2009 victor Lee Westwood has withdrawn due to “scheduling issues”.
The three course specialists will be joined by local challenger Ricardo Santos, who has slipped into third place in the European secondary tour rankings following his failure to make the cut in Toulouse last weekend but will nonetheless enjoy plenty of home support.
Amongst the ‘big guns’ hoping to firm up their Race To Dubai places in Vilamoura are John Daly, Colin Montgomerie and Martin Kaymer, any one of whom are more than capable of walking away with the prize on the day.
