Here is a very interesting picture that clearly shows some very different swings. It is to be noted that they have all won major tournaments. And will probably win more in the future.
We see swings like these all the time from club players with varying amounts of success and consistency.
The main features to consider are:
• The swing stays the same; they don’t one day swing flat and the next day upright. One day long and the next short.
• The rhythm of the swing is consistent.
• The delivery of the clubhead to the ball and through impact is what really determines how the ball will fly.
• The path of the club and the direction of the face at impact are key factors.
Now look at the face on picture. Here are the important impact keys (for a right hander).
• Hit the ball before the ground with an iron.
• Left arm and club form a straight line at impact
• Weight on the left foot before and through impact
• Strike the middle of the face with the middle of the ball.
All of the players below will be in an efficient position at impact, sending their ball to the intended target.
So even though they all look so different, they all do the same job and are similar at impact.
Drill: Practice with a 7 iron half swings from waist height on your backswing. Hit 50 balls with a half swing focusing on the aforementioned important impact keys.
