Golf association celebrates first competition

Algarve Golf hosted its first tournament on April 17 at the Boavista course near Lagos, with the winner on the day being Gary King from the Golf Shack.

This was the first of the series of competitions that the Southern Golf Association has scheduled for its members.

Keith Millington, vice-president of the association, said: “It was great getting our first tournament up and running.  This really is what the association was set up to do. Bringing golfers together, socialising, playing a few rounds and ultimately competing in a friendly tournament.”

The first tee off was at 10am and by late afternoon when the golf part had finished, participants enjoyed food and drinks at Sharky’s Bar at the Albufeira Marina.

Tim Worstall, the president of the association, said: “We only started setting up the association just over a month ago and already we have had our first competition.”

Keith Millington added: “Now that we’ve got the golf side running along nicely, we’re working a lot on our website at AlgarveGolfllp.com.

“We want to provide a full information resource for what you can do on the Algarve, including golf and some might use it to look where they can send the rest of the family while they shoot a few balls.”

Gary King said: “Boavista is a great course and playing it is always a pleasure but Algarve Golf is adding more than just the game itself.”

He added: “A drink and a chat after golf is hardly unusual, but I will admit to being surprised just before the tenth tee that there was a quick sandwich, a piece of fruit and water was provided to every association member. This may not be a huge thing but it is indicative of why I’m glad I joined.  It’s the little extras that make the difference.”

The next Algarve Golf competition is on May 29 at Palmares and costs €40 for members.
