As hundreds of Chinese are reported to be clamouring for the chance of golden visas to enter Portugal, the wife of Xiaodong Wang – the ‘golden visa’ fraudster under threat of deportation – is determined to stay put.
Talking to Expresso newspaper through an interpreter but refusing to give her name, the Chinese woman said she and her daughter are feeling “very alone” in their luxury home in Cascais, and “awaiting the decision of lawyers” over the fate of her 42-year-old husband.
Wang was arrested over a week ago on an international warrant issued by Interpol. He is wanted in China for a series of frauds for which he has been condemned to 10 years in jail.
Wang is understood to be fighting the extradition order.
Meantime, Expresso reveals there is a parallel investigation being run by DCIAP (serious crimes authority) into Wang’s involvement in money laundering and the cash purchase of a luxury car.
Another ‘golden visa’ citizen is also being investigated for money laundering but the DCIAP has not revealed the individual’s nationality.
