Going for gold

FOUR OF the region’s câmaras are to make buildings more accessible to wheelchair users, pregnant women and the elderly.

Vila Real de Santo António, Albufeira, Portimão and Tavira plan to do this by removing 70 per cent of architectural barriers by 2008.

If the initiative is successful, their efforts will be officially recognised by Europe and awarded gold flags for mobility.

It is expected that within the next few years all câmaras in the region will follow suit, meaning that the whole of the Algarve will be accessible to all.
