Mid September marks the start of a new academic year in Portugal and thanks to a new initiative by children’s charity ACCA, returning to school this month has been a delight for many underprivileged young people in the Algarve.
Entitled Back to School Project, the initiative enabled ACCA to collect and supply numerous pencils, pens, staplers, glue and other stationery items that make up the equipment for school life to those who are unable to afford these items.
Schools and social centres have a register of the children most in need and can provide numbers to fundraisers such as ACCA.
A large number of children in the Algarve receive a State subsidy for their textbooks and stationery while others receive 30% of the funding to purchase these items. Children of the unemployed or ill fall under these categories but as text books can cost from between €120 to €500, there are still many parents who cannot afford to buy them. Monetary donations have thus been used by ACCA for this purpose.
School items have been donated from a wide range of individuals, companies and organisations across the Algarve; their generosity has enabled many young people to start the 2012/13 school year successfully.
