There will be no need to be selfish about shellfish as there will be plenty to go around at Figueira’s Cockle Festival (Festival do Berbigão), taking place next weekend (September 9-10).
Known to attract thousands of visitors every year, the festival is returning to the village’s sports centre with all kinds of ‘berbigão’ dishes, such as cockle rice, pasta and rissoles.
In fact, organisers say “two tons” of cockles will be cooked for the event.
As organisers explain, the festival has strong links to the Ria de Alvor shellfishing industry, once the livelihood of many local families.
The event, which includes musical entertainment, takes place between 7pm and 1am.
Admission is €3 and includes a complimentary plate of cockles.
