Taxa Zero ao Volante GNR

GNR “Zero Alcohol at the Wheel” campaign kicks off tomorrow

The awareness-raising campaign runs until Wednesday, August 23.

The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP launch tomorrow, August 17, the “Taxa Zero ao Volante” (“Zero Alcohol at the Wheel”) Road Safety campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The “Zero Alcohol at the Wheel” campaign, which runs until next Wednesday, August 23, includes ANSR awareness initiatives and inspection operations by the GNR and the PSP, say the authorities, in a joint statement.

In Faro, awareness-raising initiatives occur in conjunction with inspection operations scheduled at the Rotunda da Cadeia.

In the note, ANSR, GNR and PSP recall that with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 grams per litre, the risk of suffering a severe or fatal accident doubles.

According to those entities, driving under the influence of alcohol causes several cognitive and information-processing disturbances, changes in the ability to react to unforeseen events, and motor incoordination.

“Alcohol also decreases the visual field, causing so-called tunnel vision. This loss of abilities, as well as changes in behaviour that can lead to euphoria and disinhibition, significantly increase the risk of involvement in road accidents”, indicates the ANSR, GNR and PSP.
