Following the unusual case of a uniformed police officer resorting to public striptease in order to earn extra money, we hear of another who has led a series of daylight robberies.
The 33-year-old Almada officer is reported to have organised a set of GNR uniforms for his accomplices, and then staged raids on business premises.
The raids went ahead on the basis that officers were ‘conducting routine inspections’, but a Brazilian scrap-metal merchant in Azeitão smelt a rat after he found that the routine inspection on his office had made off with over €6,000 in cash and a number of passports.
Thus, a full scale undercover police inquiry got underway, and the group were seen to mount two further raids on business premises in Cova da Piedade and Fernão Ferro.
A swoop earlier this month on the group’s homes netted “items of police clothing”, 40 cellphones, two computers, a plasma TV, over €7,000 in cash and various guns.
The GNR officer and all his alleged accomplices are now facing a number of charges and remain in police custody pending court appearances.
