GNR ‘reinforced’ with €2.3 million for coastal control and vigilance

In the wake of new undocumented ‘arrivals’ from Morocco (click here), the government has approved a project ploughing €2.3 million into reinforcing coastal vigilance and control. Explain reports, 75% (€1.7 million) will be covered by ‘community funding’ – meaning the government will only have to find €600,000. The project envisages increasing the number of CCTV cameras to boost the ‘potential’ of SIVICC (the integrated system of vigilance, command and control) run by the GNR Coastal Control Unit. This doesn’t immediately answer one of main problems with SIVICC, which involves lack of personnel at central command on duty at any one point to actually keep an eye on the cameras (click here).
