GNR police fine 96 people for wild camping and motorhoming in Vila do Bispo

GNR police continue to clamp down on wild camping and illegal motorhoming in the Western Algarve, having fined 96 people in Vila do Bispo on Tuesday.

Said GNR police in a statement, wild camping and motorhoming lead to “excessive and disorderly occupation of public spaces and coastal areas” with “negative consequences on landscapes, the environment and public health”.

The operation was carried out alongside several other authorities, including the regional delegation of the Institute of Nature and Forest Conservation, maritime police and Vila do Bispo firefighters.

It came less than one week after the Algarve tourism board (RTA) launched a new campaign encouraging motorhomers to “make the best choice” and park up at one of the region’s 35 official camp and caravan sites (click here).
