GNR needs more ‘muscle’ to fight crime

Strengthening the fight against crime is one of the main objectives of the new general commander of Portugal’s GNR police, Newton Parreira.

“We live in a time when threats to public safety are growing and we need to provide a prompt response to this problem. We will focus on new strategies for crime prevention,” he said.

The president of the Independent GNR Force Association (ASPIG), José Alho, said he expects the new commander to be “more active” than his predecessor and that the GNR be reinforced with more “muscle”.

“Each capital district in Portugal should have a quick intervention GNR force as a way to improve police patrolling,” added José Alho.
