In an effort to avoid a repeat of last year’s Carnaval disgrace – when 944 accidents and eight deaths were registered on Portugal’s roads during the mini-break – an additional 5,500 agents are being put on patrol throughout the country starting on February 13 and ending on Tuesday.
Entitled ‘Carnaval 2015’, the operation will involve roadside police checks.
Says the GNR, officers will be on the lookout for drivers “who are speeding and/or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs”.
