A young GNR police agent was harpooned as he tried to quell what was described as a “disturbance” in a Sines restaurant over Sunday lunchtime.
Owners of the Estrela do Norte restaurant called police after a Cape Verdian fisherman, in his 50s, began “threatening and provoking clients” with the weapon.
When police arrived, the man made off – and in a bid to avoid being caught, let loose with the harpoon. The pursuing police agent was speared in the hand, and taken to nearby Santiago de Cacém’s Hospital do Litoral Alentejano, for the barbs to be removed.
Meantime, Lusa reports that “the aggressor” was due to appear in a local court.
