GM protests condemned

FOLLOWING THE destruction of part of a genetically modified corn crop at Herdade das Lameiras in Silves (See The Resident, August 24), the President of Almargem, an Algarve-based environmental association, has said that they are against violent protests.

João Santos told the Resident: “Almargem is against the expansion of GM Crops, but doesn’t approve of the radical protests,” adding, “Unfortunately, some of the foreign people who participated at the protest have a more aggressive approach, based on their experiences in their home countries.”

He said that he knows the GM crop was authorised by central government and that the declaration of 2004, when the region was proud of being the first in the country to be considered free of GM, now has no legal standing because of new government legislation.
