Eusébio’s statue outside Benfica’s Luz Stadium in Lisbon is now protected by a glass structure which will serve as a memorial to the footballer and was concluded a couple of hours before the match between the Lisbon-side and rivals Porto (Sunday).
Hundreds of people gathered around the structure a couple of hours before the game to see how the club had decided to protect the statue of the legendary player but also the touching demonstration of sportsmanship from fans of multiple clubs who left scarves from their clubs surrounding the statue.
The glass structure featuring a crown at its top – a nod to Eusébio’s nickname ‘King’ – will be kept around the statue all through the year of mourning that Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira has declared.
