Last month, 16 talented dancers from the Associação de Dança de Lagos (ADL) were triumphant in the ‘All Dance Portugal Hybrid Contest’ which was held in the Aveiro District. Impressively, they won four first places and four second places in four different genres and were the only group in the south of Portugal to compete.
Consequently, ADL qualified for the ‘All Dance World Hybrid Contest’ which is to be held in Orlando, Florida (USA) in November this year. But, to see these ambitious dancers represent Lagos in such a prestigious competition, ADL will be calling on the help of the local community to support them in getting there.
ADL is a dance school based in charming Old Town Lagos and offers afternoon, evening and Saturday morning classes for three-year-olds right through to adult dancers. The school was inaugurated in 2004 by Ljiljana Urosevic da Silva who had a dream to create a dance school to “accommodate everyone”. She was a classical and character dancer and was trained by the Servia Novi Sad Dance School and the Agripanna Academy of St Petersburg (Vaganova).
Currently, the dance school has students from over 20 different countries and has received awards at national and international levels. They take a lot of pride in their history and are constantly looking for ways to improve their facilities and provide more aspiring dancers with the resources to become professional, world class. Currently, they are partly funded by the local Câmara but mostly rely on kind, donations and sponsorships from the local community.
Over the next few months, ADL will be hosting multiple fundraising events to assist these young dancers in the cost of travel and housing in the Orlando Competition. The dance group will be performing at the Lagos Cultural Centre on June 24, 25 and 26 with the show “Le Grand Jeté”. All proceeds will go towards their trip to Orlando.
They will also perform on June 12 at the Art Without Borders in Albufeira and on July 31 at Dançarte in Faro. In addition to this, the school is actively seeking a business sponsor to help with equipment costs such as clothing and potentially a venue where they can hold a fundraising event to help raise further funds.
All Dance International are the biggest dance organisation worldwide with presence in five continents. It is the official dance championship and unites the most outstanding competitors across the globe for world titles and awards.
For ADL, the chance to compete in the ‘All Dance World Hybrid Contest’ is a crucial opportunity to showcase their undeniable talent. Not only will they represent Portugal, but, more importantly, the south of Portugal where opportunities like these are sparse.
In May, ADL was presented an award by Lagos Câmara for their excellent results, the contribution to the community and for their responsibility in representing Lagos in such a commendable way.
