Gilberto Madaíl in Switzerland over Qatar’s corruption allegations

Former Portuguese football federation chief Gilberto Madaíl has been in Switzerland this week helping with inquiries into allegations of corruption concerning Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup. Talking to journalists, he said he had been grilled for three hours, and although he knew nothing about the possible “trading of favours”, he did feel that if FIFA had had an independent commission, Portugal and Spain would have been chosen to host the 2018 championships as their joint bid “was the best”. FIFA have announced that the 2018 World Cup will be played in Russia.
